As an adult, I have driven across the United States alone eight times. Each trip, I fell more in love with America's landscape and people. There are times when I'm driving on a freeway in Los Angeles and the right song comes on the radio, and I imagine that I'm on a dusty desert highway in New Mexico, driving across a mountain pass in Colorado, wandering through Southern Utah in awe of its Mars-like terrain, or standing at the edge of one of the Great Lakes in my home state of Michigan. There is nothing quite like experiencing each state's distinct beauty. Recent events in the U.S. have left me heartbroken, feeling helpless about the country I've become so intimate with. Those complicated and unexpected feelings led me to this project -- documenting the beauty and resilience of the United States in one of its darkest and most turbulent hours in recent history.
