I had the chance to take advantage of the rare rainy weather a couple of weeks ago with Austin Carr (Mavrick Models) in Pasadena, Calif. Everyone has been complaining about the weather, but I love it. Rainclouds create perfectly diffused light — the entire city is currently a soft box!
Having spent several weeks alone in the Mojave Desert a little less than a year ago, exploring and wandering and becoming closer to that region of America than any other I’ve visited, I cannot understand the destruction that has taken place in Joshua Tree National Park over the last several weeks during the government shutdown here in the United States.
The idea that anyone would feel comfortable chopping down such rare and iconic trees to clear a path for their vehicles is unconscionable. The way humans sometimes behave when they believe no one will hold them accountable is beyond my grasp. For now, I am heartbroken for Joshua Tree — but I plan to return to the desert soon to document the aftermath of the darker realities of human nature and the beautiful resilience of the American desert. It has taught me so much about life itself.
One of my favorite outtakes from my shoot with actress Priscilla Ford at her lovely home in Hollywood.
