Joshua Tree

Having spent several weeks alone in the Mojave Desert a little less than a year ago, exploring and wandering and becoming closer to that region of America than any other I’ve visited, I cannot understand the destruction that has taken place in Joshua Tree National Park over the last several weeks of the government shutdown here in the United States.

That anyone would feel comfortable chopping down such rare and iconic trees to clear a path for vehicles where there was no road is unconscionable. The way humans sometimes behave when they believe no one will hold them accountable is beyond my ability to comprehend. For now, I am heartbroken for Joshua Tree — but I plan to return to the desert soon to document the aftermath of the darker realities of human nature, as well as the beautiful resilience of the American desert that has taught me so much about life itself.

LOOKING BACK ON 2017

This year was a big one, filled with lots of extreme ups and downs. Photography has always been my rock -- the one thing that keeps me going even in the midst of chaos. I was lucky to get to work with a variety of amazing, supportive, wonderful clients this year -- ranging from huge corporations like Mercedes-Benz of North America, to corporate restaurant chains like Rubio's Coastal Grill and Bibigo Fresh Korean Kitchen, to smaller independent brands like High Ruin, as well as wonderful nonprofits like the Orange County Small Business Development Center as they featured local businesses that are doing awesome things, like Inland Wharf Brewing Company.

I'm genuinely looking forward to 2018 -- wondering about the challenges and inspirations the new year will bring is always my favorite part about New Year's Eve. Here's to the passing of a year full of growth and amazing opportunities; and a toast to whatever wonderful things 2018 has in store.

I'm also sending out all the best to everyone reading this -- may the new year bring you all the challenges and opportunities you need to grow into the person you want to become, to live the life you've imagined. Here's to 2018, and exciting new chapters.
